Florida Tarpon Fishing Report November 4th 2017

Tarpon on FlyI haven’t posted in a while.  Jenni and I have been busy running all over the Everglades and Florida Bay.  With the park closed for just over a month before we arrived and ZERO fishing pressure needless to say the fishing was nothing short of epic.

We are headed back south late February to fish the Everglades and upper Keys the entire month of March.  I have a few prime dates still available.

If you love fishing adventures and big fish, you owe it to yourself to fish the Everglades.  It is an unforgettable experience.

I will be back from the Everglades in April.  Just in time for the season here.  Although the tarpon fishing gets consistent late April, May through August is the peak of the tarpon migration in the Boca Grande/Charlotte Harbor area where I live.  Now is the time to get your dates booked for the 2018 season.

Florida Tarpon Fishing Report October 12th 2017

Everglades Tarpon FishingI haven’t posted in a while.  Jenni and I have been busy running all over the Everglades and Florida Bay.  Because the Everglades National Park was closed due to hurricane Irma, we came down a few days later than usual.  We planned on fishing the waters around Islamorada and Key Largo.  Luckily with the windy weather forecast for the next few days the park opened the day we arrived.  With the park closed for just over a month and ZERO fishing pressure needless to say the fishing was nothing short of epic.

The screenshot is from a few days ago.  Shot with my Humminbird Helix 10 MEGA.  It shows tarpon holding in a shallow cut.  The drop off was only 1-2’.  The shallower area was grass bottom and the deeper was a mix of gravel, sand and mud.  This is an area I have found fish many times over the years.  These fish were not showing on top at all.  Other than the images on my Humminbird there was no sign of tarpon or even bait in the area.  Just a few years ago I would have quickly moved on without even wetting a line.  I was able to locate the fish and recognize the structure (the edges of the drop off).  Then using the Spot Lock feature on my Minn Kota Ulterra i-Pilot Link thoroughly work the area.  Amazing to say the least.

Some areas of Florida Bay and the Everglades really show the destructive power of a hurricane and some areas remain untouched.

Everglades TarponYes, Jenni out fished me all week. No surprise there…

Florida Tarpon Fishing Report July 5th 2017

BOCA GRANDE, FLORIDA TARPON FISHINGWe are now getting into the best part of the season.  The crowds of May and June have gone.  The tarpon are happier and so am I.

There are a lot of differences in the fishing this time of year.  The most noticeable is the boat traffic.  After the big 4th of July weekend Boca Grande is a different place altogether.  As most of my clients and friends know, this is my favorite time of the season.

Here in the Boca Grande area peak tarpon season is May-August.  I still have a few openings this month as well as August.

In 2016 we had another great fall season tarpon fishing in the Everglades.  As usual the fall migration did not disappoint.  It doesn’t matter if you fish with spinning rods or fly tackle, tarpon fishing the Everglades is an adventure you will not forget.  October and November are prime time for tarpon in the Everglades.

All of my open dates in November are already booked, but I still have October 5th, 6th, 7th, 13th, 16th, 17th, 21st-23rd, 29th-31st.

Fishing Report December 19, 2016

Everglades TarponWhile the rest of the country is experiencing freezing temperatures we are having some of the best weather of the year.  The high today here in Port Charlotte is 88.  They say the warm weather is here to stay for a while.

Although I would rather have been fishing, I have spent this last week sanding my big boat.  I am re-painting, re-powering and re-rigging it.  I do all of the work myself so I expect it will be a few weeks till I get back in the game.  It is a lot of work, but it will be ready to go for the season.

Boca Grande TarponHere in the Boca Grande area peak tarpon season is May-August.  If you are planning a trip to the area in search of tarpon, now is the time to get your dates in the book.

We had another great fall season tarpon fishing in the Everglades.  Even with all of the windy weather we had in October as usual the fall migration did not disappoint.  I am excited to go back late February.

Late February and the first two weeks of April are already booked, but I still have prime days available in March.  It doesn’t matter if you fish with spin or fly tackle, tarpon fishing the Everglades is an adventure you will not forget.  March is prime time for tarpon in the Everglades.

Fishing Report November 16, 2016

fly fishing for tarponWith a cold front coming through today I decided to take a much needed day off.  This front is a minor one I really don’t see it affecting the fishing more than a day or two.  Down here in the Everglades there are a lot of places to hide from the wind. (and everything else…)

The weather this past week before this front was the best we have had since we arrived here October 1st.  Probably the best weather we have had all year.  Jenni and I had planned the week off ahead of time to fish ourselves.  We got lucky with the weather and had a few epic days on the water.  Dead calm, laid up sleepers, finners all day.  For fly fishing it is as good as it gets.

img_0987-450Overall this has been another great fall down here tarpon fishing in the Everglades.  Even with all of the windy weather we had in October as usual the fall migration did not disappoint.  We still have over two weeks till we go home and I am already looking forward to coming back in the spring.

The first two weeks of April are already booked, but we still have a few prime days available in March for tarpon fishing in the Everglades.  It doesn’t matter if you fish with spin or fly tackle, tarpon fishing the Everglades is an adventure you will not forget.

At home in the Boca Grande area tarpon season is right around the corner.  May-August is prime time.  Now is the time to get your days in the book.
