gladesreportWith the red tide and Hurricane Matthew making headlines at home Jenni and I are down south tarpon fishing in the Everglades as usual this time of year.  We are booked solid till we go back home in early December.  Hopefully that hurricane marks the end of the bad weather for a while.

I have vowed to spend what little off time I have with a fly rod in my hand and not behind a computer.  Reports will be limited for the next few weeks.

Fishing Report September 29th, 2016

Good news and bad news…

glades11-500Today was my last day on the water here in my home area for a while.  This morning along the beach of Boca Grande there were literally thousands of dead baitfish and catfish.  Yes, unfortunately the red tide is here.  I have heard it is from Venice all the way down past Sanibel.  This time of year it sometimes shows up.  It usually lingers from a couple weeks to a month or so in varying degrees.  It mostly kills bottom fish.  Catfish, pinfish, grunts and mullet seem to be the most susceptible.  Snook and redfish generally leave the areas red tide shows up.  Tarpon will actually feed on the small fish as they are dying.  That is what I have been up to this past week.  Red tide makes a hell of a chum slick.

The Einstein’s at the FWC say it is a natural occurring algae bloom.  There is nothing natural about it.  I am convinced it is Obama’s fault…

That is the bad news…

The good news…

FFC3It is that time again.  Time to head back south to Chokoloskee and the 10,000 Islands in order to get ahead of the tarpon on their fall migration.  (and away from the red tide!)  Just like every year, we will be fishing for tarpon in the Everglades right through the end of November.

November is already booked solid, but I still have a couple open days in October.  The fall migration is some of the most exciting tarpon fishing of the year.  Full size tarpon in very shallow water.  It doesn’t get any better.  Fishing for tarpon in the cooler fall temperatures is pretty nice too.

I will be coming back home the 1st of December.  By then the red tide will be long gone and the water will have a chance to return to normal.

If you are thinking about next year, March will be here before you know it!!!  I am already booking for the 2017 tarpon season.

Joy's TarponThe gathering has begun.  The last few days have been outstanding.  Tarpon are pouring into the area from all sides.  The numbers will increase daily.  As long as the nice weather holds the tarpon will continue to be all over.

As most people know, tarpon are my only target 9 months a year.  The next 4 months, May-August are the peak of the season here in the Boca Grande area.

There is still time to get in on the action.  I have a few openings during my favorite part of tarpon season in July and August.

I am fishing 7 days a week throughout the season.  I will do my best to update my fishing report with new photos as often as I can.

Till next time!

Florida Fishing Report-04-18-2016

Boca Grande TarponWith a strong start to the 2016 tarpon season we are headed directly into the heart of the Boca Grande season.  The weather is prime this week for a big push of fish from the south.  Judging from what we saw in the Everglades last month the migration is strong this season.  The numbers of tarpon will build daily as we get into May.  I am excited to get to it.

Peak tarpon season in the Boca Grande area is May-August.  I am still open June 2nd and the 28th.  I have a few openings in July and August as well.

I am now booking for the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 migration through the Everglades.  I expanded the dates to March 1st-April 15 and October 1st-November 30th. If you are in for a true tarpon fishing adventure, fly fishing or spin, this is the place.

Florida Fishing Report-03-25-2016

glades12-500It is hard to believe March is almost over.  Other than two cold fronts, one early in the month and one this week, the fishing has been outstanding.  What a great start to tarpon season.  After a month chasing tarpon in the Everglades it is time to go back home.

The migration is strong this season.  The fish should start arriving in the Boca Grande area any day now.  The numbers will build daily throughout April into May.  I am excited to get to it.

Peak tarpon season in the Boca Grande/Charlotte Harbor area is May-August.  I still have a few openings in May and June if you want to get in on the early bite.

I am now booking for the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 migration through the Everglades.  With near 100% repeat bookings dates are very limited.  If you are in for a true tarpon fishing adventure.  Fly fishing or spin, this is the place.  For more information: Gladestarpon.com

Anyone concerned about the Lake Okeechobee water releases affecting our area, don’t be.  It looks like a bunch of Fort Myers Captains are bitching and complaining they can’t catch fish because of it.  They think Big Sugar is to blame.  They think Big Sugar should write them a big check…  Trust me these guys weren’t very good before the water releases and never caught much anyway.  Come to Boca Grande our water is fine.  I will show you how it is done.

Florida Fishing Report 02-27-2016

Fishing ReportIt is a real exciting time of year. Spring is finally here. In a couple days, March 1st, I make my biannual migration south to Chokoloskee and the 10,000 Islands. I look forward every year to chasing tarpon around the vast backcountry of the Everglades.

I will be back home to the Boca Grande/Charlotte Harbor early April just in time for the best snook fishing of the year and the beginning of our tarpon season here.

In the Boca Grande/Charlotte Harbor area with the cooler than normal weather pattern we have this spring I expect the tarpon fishing to get consistent sometime mid-late April.  Our peak season runs May-August. If tarpon are what you are after these 4 months are the best time to be here.

If you haven’t seen our Facebook page or our Instagram get on there and check out some of Jenni’s latest photos. You do not have to have a Facebook or Instagram account to view our pages.

Fishing Report January 29th, 2016

4wt fly rod snookDecember, January and early February is my off season.  The plan was to do some fishing, a little hunting and a lot of sanding, grinding and fixing on my big boat.  Since Christmas we have had a rainy front come through every couple days.  It has hindered all of my goals for this off season.  Well not all of my goals.  Just the sanding, grinding and fixing part.  Hopefully with the dry warmer weather coming in the boat will be done Sunday.

In just a couple weeks the tarpon will start their migration.  I can not wait.

Well this past fall I had a chance to really put the new motor on my skiff to the test.  The 90hp Evinrude E-tec has exceeded my expectations.  137 hrs, 2,177.59 miles and 334.38 gallons over two months.  That is around 6.5 miles to the gallon.  Running it hard everyday.  Zero issues.  It starts instantly, runs quiet and the hole shot is crazy good.  I couldn’t be happier with it.

Fishing Report November 29th, 2015

perfect

It does not get any better.

The fishing since my last report has been great.  Just like last year, the fall run of tarpon was awesome.  As you can see from the photo, I had a chance to catch a few myself.

Now I have just three short months to get ready for the spring migration.

In the meantime I will be targeting snook, redfish and juvenile tarpon in the backcountry.

Well during the last two months I had a chance to really put the new motor on my skiff to the test.  The 90hp Evinrude E-tec has exceeded my expectations.  137 hrs, 2,177.59 miles and 334.38 gallons over the last two months.  That is around 6.5 miles to the gallon.  Running it hard everyday.  Zero issues.  It starts instantly, runs quiet and the hole shot is crazy good.  I couldn’t be happier with it.
